History and Evolution of Search Engine Optimization

SEO HISTORY

Google was officially launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to market Google search, which has become the most used web based search engine. They were students at Stanford University in California, developed a search algorithm known as “BackRub” in 1996. In the beginning times the search engine required the E-mail id of the user and took almost 24 hours to get the information. In the early period the information that contained was limited. They realized this backlash in 2001’s World TradeCenter attack, during this time many people across the globe went searching about this incident, and didn’t get any information about it. It was huge defect for Google because it wasn’t crawlable. So after this issue arises Google improved their search engine optimization programs. SEO; search engine optimization, which is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.

They overcome this by adding three processes to the search engine.

·         Crawling: automated fetching of webpages by a software process. A web crawler is a program or automated script which browses the worldwide web in a methodical automated manner. This process is called web crawling or spidering.

·         Caching: the activity if storing data for free use, such as a copy of web page served by a webserver.

·         Indexing: process of adding webpages into Google search.

       They seek information from webmasters who responsible for maintaining one or more websites. They concluded that optimization can improve the search engine. Some people opposed this decision but later they agreed. There are two kinds of optimization on page/on site optimization, which is modification of content, quality, headline etc. during SEO. Off page optimization, modification of outside of webpage as sharing, links, submission, blogging etc . After publishing this correction the search engine began face spamming. Google always look after for their trust values. So they began to add more applications to Google.

Niche/Content specific

 During Niche specific period crawlers only focused on keywords. If the website contains more repeating key words they get ranked. This updation of Google simply leads to spam. Websites are only focused on keywords instead of a qualified content. Keyword stuffing is a black hat SEO technique were we injecting keywords in the content. White hat SEO is an ethical stuffing of keywords. But according to the niche specific ranking system the websites began to stuffing the keywords in each and everywhere in their site. Google began to control the content by changing algorithms to maintain quality of the contents. So they changed their terms from content specific to link specific.

Link specific

These terms of Google simply reveals that the websites which has more link connectivity from other websites get ranked. Link specific terms didn’t improve the quality of the webpage .they only focused on getting links from others. It leads to low quality content pages and sites which can effects the trust values of Google. And most of the websites were ranked only because of their high supports of links from others and also some of the sites started to sale the links. These unauthentic ranking system leads to reduce the trust among Google.  The Google again changed their terms to quality link specific

These terms only support the websites which has link connectivity from a ranked qualified site. After introducing these systems the web sites get ranked only if they had qualified contents in their sites and having only ranked site’s links. Twitter, share button installing site, adobe-flash player installing links are example for 10 on 10 ranked websites across the world. According to Google page ranking is trust value towards the website. In the previous period, ranking  updation  occur more than three time, after 2013 there is no updation.

After introducing this system websites began to sale qualified links again. To solve this spam Google again changed and modified their algorithm to ‘passing the juice’ SEO. It is the power that is considered to be passed to your site by backlinks from any external or internal sites or pages. This power said to be a vote for your website, when you receive a lot of such backlink powers your passing juice score increases and which website sales more links get reduced their ranking. To maintain site’s ranking or equity Google introduced an attribution <ahref=”http;//www.google.com” rel=”no follow”>Google</a>.

adwords

Google developed advertisement programs ‘adwords’ as earning outcome from publishing ads in Google or blogs or other sites. Google ads are a prepaid service which will improve the quality of websites through publishing advertisements. Google gets money for each click “pay per click”, Google reduces coast in each clicks. Another advertisement program developed by Google is ‘Google adsense’ it’s an earning program websites publish their ads in their own websites or blogs, this in an affiliate program.

 During 2009 Google done many modifications in their algorithms to improve the quality,     achievements, and trust values. They introduced more features in their search engine:

Personalized search results: here Google save each and every searching data of each person as documents when they are logged in to Google, and retrieve data when they search for similar things Google shows the previously searched data and give more information about the searching contents. Google save each documents as categories were they fit by their similarity in contents. Google also introduced suggestion option in their search engines. This made the searching result most easy and reliable to the costumer. According to the users interaction towards websites can affect the ranking system. Google records mostly interactive websites and its improves ranking system, they still considers this system for ranking a website.

Pogo sticking: pogo sticking phenomena is a promoting system which will ranks the website according to their interaction, the most visited sites gets ranked above and shown in one step ahead and also demoted the least visited sites. Also shows ‘not relevant’ button for this least visited site during a person’s enquiry in search engine. Google developed this suggestion to identify the low qualified content webpages, but it won’t be worked in several times.

During 2010 Google gives more important to social media signal in their search engine. At that time social medias are 80% interactive platforms, so the websites who shares more information in social media’s get ranked. Gradually ranking is calculated according to more visited sites in social medias and the website gets ranked. When two websites get equal likes or supports from the costumer Google consider the more interacted or visited sites or on the basis of person, status, etc. this is known as influential power. Also Google then considered relationship based interaction building; which focuses on selective persons to share the topic.

On 2011 Google developed another version ‘Google+’: when a person search a data in Google and shared it to Google+, and then a person who is connected to or the same person searched it again in Google show the previous searching results in 4th or 5th positions.
